There are over 20,000 species of bees, living on every continent, except for Antarctica. The best know to humans are honey bees. This species have been domesticated and are used to pollinate crops and produce honey. These are typically social bees, which live in large colonies. However, approximately half of the species of bee are solitary, building their own nests.
Originally descended from wasps, bees are members of the super family Apoidea and are considered a Clade, called Anthrophila. There are several different families of bees, the most common of which is the family Apidae. This family includes honey bees and bumble bees.
